The Bentley Arnage

The Bentley Arnage is a large luxury car produced by Bentley in the United Kingdom beginning in Spring of 1998. The Arnage and it's Rolls-Royce-branded sister, the Silver Seraph, were the first entirely new designs for the company since 1980.

A significant break from the past was under the bonnet: Whereas for decades prior, all Rolls and Bentley cars shared a single 6.75 L V8, the new Arnage was powered by a twin-turbo BMW V8, while the Silver Seraph used a BMW V12. Production of the Rolls-Royce model ended with BMW's takeover of that marque in 2002, while derivatives of the Arnage continue under Volkswagen AG's ownership to this day, though the old Rolls (now Cosworth) V8 has returned to the engine bay.

This vast car is more than 5 m long, almost 2 m wide, and having a mass of over 2.5 metric tonnes. For a time it was one of the most powerful and quickest four-door saloons on the market, and the torque of the 6.75 L engine is legendary.

2005 Bentley Arnage Buyer's Guide

2005 Bentley Arnage Buyer's Guide: What's New for the 2005 Bentley Arnage?
There are a few changes in store this year. On the outside, the Arnage features revised front styling, including four round headlights, that brings the car a bit more in line with the look of the new Bentley Continental GT. The Arnage's color palette has been expanded, too, to a total of 40 possible exterior colors, not including the dual-tones. Inside, the Arnage's interior has been updated with a new dashboard top, better ergonomics and control switchgear, new instruments, an improved navigation system, and more interior hide colors. In terms of mechanical changes, Bentley says it has altered the Arnage's rear suspension to give drivers a better ride quality and a more consistent handling. Lastly, the twin-turbo V8 engine has been updated to meet the latest governmental emissions standards.

Advantages of the 2005 Bentley Arnage:
Impressively opulent and customizable interior
Traditional styling
Available in regular or stretched versions
Objections to the 2005 Bentley Arnage:
Older design as compared to newer Rolls-Royce Phantom and Maybach 57 and 62
Auto Advice:
Both the Maybach and the Rolls-Royce Phantom are better cars to drive and far more technologically sophisticated, making "archaic" a seemingly more suitable name for the Bentley Arnage despite the updates for 2005. However, in our humble opinion, the Arnage is the nicest looking of this ultra-luxury sedan trio. The Bentley speaks the visual language of wealth far better than the Maybach and Rolls-Royce.

2005 Bentley Arnage T mega-luxury sedan

Like Pamela Anderson, the updated 2005 Bentley Arnage T mega-luxury sedan flaunts most of what you'll want to know about right up front.

Gone are the busy lamps-under-windows headlights of the previous Arnage, replaced by a pair of individual beacons per side (two of the four are Xenon low-beams with integrated turn signals) that co-opt the rakish look of the Continental GT coupe. On each side, an integrated power washer splits the two round lenses.

Bentley has also reworked the car's prominent radiator-shell grille (available in matrix or vaned styles); it now flows more smoothly into the hood (which has been raised slightly). These are subtle revisions, but they dramatically clean up the Arnage's prow and go a long way toward modernizing the car's regal appearance.

Other updates include an improved rear suspension (with recalibrated springs, dampers, and bushings) for crisper handling and better ride quality (even in the sporty Arnage T model), plus a freshened interior with a new center console, neater instrument graphics, and a more sensible control layout. Two new 19-inch wheel designs and additional color choices (well, really, for a price, you can have almost any color you want) round out the primary Arnage T upgrades for 2005.

Despite a curb weight of some 5700 leather-lined pounds, the big T remains a sprinter, thanks to its familiar 450-horsepower, twin-turbo 6.75-liter V-8. The chassis enhancements fostered by parent company Volkswagen encourage deeper exploration of the engine's might--for all of its mass, the new T handles quite enthusiastically.

With a base price of nearly a quarter-million bucks, the 2005 Arnage T runs in rarefied air indeed. But it's a compelling choice for the pampered set--sportier and less "I'm filthy with it" than the Rolls Phantom, more charismatic than the Maybach 57. If Ms. Anderson drove by in one, you might even notice her second.

New Bentley Azure unveiled at Frankfurt Motor Show

New Bentley Azure unveiled at Frankfurt Motor Show: Frankfurt, 12th September 2005... Today, at the IAA Motor Show, Bentley Motors reveals the production version of the new Azure.

The luxurious four-seater Azure, which goes on sale in Spring 2006, is the latest in a portfolio of wonderfully desirable 'dropheads' stretching back many decades and reaffirms Bentley's reputation as creator of the world's most elegant convertibles.

Bentley first hinted that a new Azure might be in the pipeline when it unveiled the glamorous Arnage Drophead Coupé show car at the Los Angeles Auto Show in January 2005. The show car stimulated such interest among Bentley aficionados that the decision was quickly taken to continue its extensive development programme in time for delivery of the first customer cars in Spring 2006. Last month, Bentley announced that the production version of the show car would carry the evocative Azure name. Like its iconic predecessor, which was in production from 1995 to 2002, the new Azure becomes the flagship of the Bentley model range.

The design of the new Azure is, first and foremost, unmistakeably Bentley. It shares its face with the current Arnage range and its platform ensures it seats four adults in supreme comfort. But it is also unmistakeably unique. The entire cabin and rear section of the car are newly designed, with a stunning bespoke interior; the objective being to create an opulent and inviting seating area that reflects its status as a car that is at home in Palm Springs or the Riviera. The complex folding roof on the convertible is operated hydraulically at the touch of a switch: the impressive, three-layer fabric assembly being elegantly stowed beneath the hide-trimmed tonneau in under 30 seconds.

The twin-turbocharged V8 engine, double-wishbone suspension and extremely rigid body structure of the Arnage provide a state-of-the-art basis for the new Azure. It is powered by a 450bhp (336Kw) version of the Arnage’s 6.75-litre twin-turbocharged intercooled V8 engine and produces 875Nm (645lb ft) of torque.

The specification of the production version of the Azure is virtually unchanged from the original L.A. show car. The principle change is the introduction of high technology, lightweight, carbon fibre, under-floor cross braces that contribute to the exceptional levels of body stiffness, benefiting refinement, ride and handling. In addition, the chrome trimmed bumpers and sills of the show car are now painted in body colour with a delicate chrome trim that runs the length of the car, enhancing the flowing lines of the Azure body.

"The production-specification Bentley Azure graces our stand at the Frankfurt Motor Show just nine months after we revealed our concept car in Los Angeles," says Bentley Motors chairman, Dr Franz-Josef Paefgen. "We enjoy an excellent dialogue with our customers and the new Azure epitomises how responsive Bentley is to satisfying their aspirations. Bentley develops and produces cars that people desire and that are faithful to our heritage. The new Azure is the perfect example of this philosophy."

Details of market availability and pricing will be released nearer the Azure’s on-sale date.

Bentley Celebrates the 75th anniversary of the Blue Train Race

Bentley Celebrates the 75th anniversary of the Blue Train Race
Crewe, 31st October 2005… Some 75 years since the adventurer and Le Mans winner Woolf Barnato raced and beat the famous Blue Train on its journey across France, Bentley Motors and its coach building division Mulliner are celebrating his achievement with a powerful, distinctive and luxurious grand tourer based on its flagship four-door saloon: the Arnage Blue Train Series.

In specification, the Blue Train Series Arnage features the 450bhp version of Bentley’s remarkable 6.75-litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine, allied to the chassis and suspension set-up of the refined and supple Arnage R.

With a 0-60mph acceleration of 5.5 seconds and a top speed of 168mph the Blue Train Series Arnage has the performance to satisfy the most demanding of drivers. A mountainous 645lb ft of torque (875Nm) available at 3250rpm means that the Bentley’s performance is instantly accessible.

Externally, the Arnage Blue Train Series is distinguished by its 19” seven-spoke alloy wheels, sunroof, chrome radiator shell, chrome mirror caps and quadruple exhaust tailpipes. Both front and rear bumpers are designed specifically for the Arnage Blue Train Series, with stainless steel matrix mesh to the front bumper cooling ducts. In homage to the slatted bonnet of the original ‘Blue Train’ Bentley Speed Six, Bentley’s design team has specified vertical slatted vents, painted in body colour, behind the trailing edge of the front wheel arches. The Blue Train Arnage will carry the black winged ‘B’ inside and out, as the distinguishing mark of the most powerful and performance-focused Bentleys, and will also have Blue Train badging on the front wing and door aperture treadplates. A ‘privacy’ rear backlight may also be specified, another feature which echoes the coachwork of Barnato’s 1930s coupé.

The interior is equally distinctive. All instrument and dial faces are black, and the centre console features a subtle Bentley Blue Train badge. Mulliner’s meticulous craftsmanship is evident in the veneer waistrails, which feature chrome inlay with winged ‘B’ badges, and the ‘Blue Train’ embroidered headrests, in a coordinating thread colour. Other special elements of the interior specification are the wood and hide steering wheel, additional wood veneer panels on the doors and contrast piping on the seats.

A limited number of the Blue Train Series will be produced, the majority being intended for the USA, and all orders have already been filled.

"I am delighted with the Arnage Blue Train Series," said Derek Davies, Brand Director, Arnage and Mulliner, "The engineers and craftsmen of Bentley Mulliner have created an exceptionally desirable car, and a fitting tribute to Woolf Barnato's amazing achievement. In doing so, Bentley Mulliner has created another unique chapter to the Bentley story."

Earlier this month, the first model in the series joined the original ‘Blue Train’ Speed Six, now owned by Bentley enthusiasts Bruce and Jolene McCaw, along with other historically significant Bentley cars in a 75th Anniversary tour from Cannes to London, following Barnato’s original route. Participants enjoyed a more leisured approach to the journey than that taken by Woolf Barnato, with attractions such as wine-tasting, overnight stops and gastronomic meals at chateaux en route.

2005 Bentley Arnage R

2005 Bentley Arnage R - Respected For a Reason: Named for one of the most challenging corners on the Le Mans racing circuit, the Arnage was fittingly introduced at the French circuit in April of 1998. It was 70 years prior that a Bentley, powered by a 4.5-liter engine, achieved victory at the 24 hours of Le Mans endurance race. To commemorate this achievement the Arnage was initially offered with a 4.5-liter engine developed with BMW and Cosworth, making it the first engine in nearly 60 years that was unique to the Bentley marque. In 2002, the Series Two Arnage was introduced, completely reworked and powered by a Bentley-built 6.75-liter V8 engine. The Arnage T was the first of the Series Two, and was followed a few months later by the Arnage R. The long-wheelbase Arnage RL was added for the 2003 model year.

The Arnage receives exterior updates including four round headlights with chrome bezels and integrated turn indicators, a revised hood line, a new radiator shell, and the choice of either a matrix or vaned radiator grille. The interior design is dramatically updated with a new dashboard top, new switchgear, better ergonomics with secondary controls hidden behind panels, fresh instruments and new DVD satellite navigation unit. Customers may choose from 40 standard colors plus two-tone options and 27 interior hide options. Rear suspension has been revised for both better ride quality and more consistent handling response

2005 Bentley Continental GT

2005 Bentley Continental GT - Ultimate Luxury Vehicle: The Continental GT is the first model to come out of Bentley Motor Cars, Ltd., the new company that was formed on September 17, 2002, ending a 70- year partnership with Rolls-Royce. Unveiled in concept form at the 2002 Paris Motor Show, the new model is smaller and less expensive than any past Bentley, but its design remains true to the marque. It is also the first model unique to the Bentley line to be produced in over 70 years, and the first ever to feature all-wheel drive.

2006 Bentley Continental Flying Spur

2006 Bentley Continental Flying Spur - The new Continental Flying Spur is the fastest four-door in the company's history, and the fastest in the world, with a top speed of 195mph. It marries the excitement, power, refinement and craftsmanship of the Continental GT with enhanced luxury and space to provide a supreme combination of performance, style and comfort.

The launch of the Continental Flying Spur is a further step forward in the revitalisation of Bentley, which began in 1998 with significant investment in Crewe, the company's design, engineering and manufacturing headquarters.

The Continental Flying Spur was created at the state-of-the-art Crewe factory, where a 550-strong team of engineers has worked alongside Bentley's renowned designers, craftsmen and craftswomen. Access to parent company Volkswagen's worldwide engineering test facilities has also been of prime importance to the development of the car and the Continental Flying Spur has benefitted from the use of the group's advanced windtunnels, proving grounds and prototyping facilities.

"The Continental Flying Spur is a brilliant example of how to match world-beating technologies with renowned craftsmanship," says Bentley chairman Dr Franz-Josef Paefgen. "It is a performance car but not at the cost of comfort and as such represents a unique proposition - a sumptuous and spacious four-door Grand Tourer with the heart and soul of a high-performance coupe."

2007 Bentley Continental GTC Midsize Convertible

The Bentley Continental GT coupe has been a runaway success, so when Bentley announced the impending arrival of the Continental GTC droptop it wasn't much of a surprise. Like the coupe, the Continental GTC will be powered by a 552-hp W12 that sends its substantial power to all four wheels through a six-speed automatic. Not all of the technical specs were released so we'll have to wait and see if it gained any weight. Bentley stylists worked hard to assure that the coupe's distinctive roofline wouldn't be lost with the switch to a soft top. So far, none of the official photos prove if they succeeded, but our unofficial spy pics seem to indicate that the GTC will look just fine when it goes on sale in the spring of 2006.

2006 Bentley Azure Large Convertible

What Edmunds.com Says:This is the kind of convertible that will appeal to Bentley's traditional buyers, but those seeking a more dynamic drive will have to wait for the Continental based droptop.

What We Know: Bentley's true successor to the Azure, which was discontinued in 2003, was unveiled at the 2005 Los Angeles auto show and has been confirmed for production. This four-seat convertible shares its platform, as well as its front end and wheelbase with the most recent version of the Arnage. The Azure also features the Arnage's comfort suspension, as well as its 6.75-liter twin-turbocharged V8. This powertrain produces 450 horsepower and 645 lb-ft of torque. The cabin, which takes its cues from modern furniture design and features more seating space than the Azure, is unique to the vehicle, though, as is the rear end. Other special features include pop-up rollover protection, 19-inch chrome finished alloy wheels, LED-lit taillamps and a fully automatic canvas roof that descends completely in 25 seconds.
